In this season of Reformation, I thought you'd like a new text for Baptism in the spirit (and tune) of Luther. I recently wrote this text for a friend and his wife at the baptism of their first child. It only works with the traditional tune of "A Mighty Fortress" TLH 262 and LW 298. Please use it if you wish. I would also appreciate your comments. I ask only that you give glory to God first and credit where it is due second.

You will see clearly Matthew 28:19, Romans 6, Luther's Small Catechism, and a paraphrase of Luther from the Large Catechism (Tappert, p. 437, line 10). Slashes are to indicate phrase breaks. You will see instantly how this fits the tune.

"Baptize All Nations In The Name"

Tune: Ein' feste Burg (rhythmic) TLH 262, LW 298

1. "Baptize all nations in the name / of Father, Son, and Spirit,"
Spoke Jesus Christ our Lord who came / to save us by His merit.
By water and the Word / God's gifts are conferred:
Forgiveness of sin, / new life and pow'r within,
Deliv'rance from all evil.

2. The sinful flesh cannot believe / this miracle and treasure:
Though voice and hand of man perceived, / 'tis God Himself full measure.
This water of its own / can for none atone;
But joined with God's Word, / true faith and gift afford.
This truth is sure and certain.

3. He who believes and is baptized / receives the Lord's salvation.
The Holy Spirit deigns to give / divine regeneration.
This truth we now embrace: / justified by grace!
Our Old Adam dies; / with Jesus Christ we rise,
The name of God upon us.

4. All glory be to God above, / Creator of all nations;
All praise to Christ who came in love / to bring us our salvation;
Praise to the Holy Ghost / in whose work we boast.
God grant that our days / are lived in endless praise
And His baptismal favor. Amen.
