DEATHS LISTED IN DIARY OF W.S. SOUTH Extracted by Bill PAGE, Copyright 2002 According to his obituary, Walter S. SOUTH was born in Kentucky about 1824. He came to Texas by 1847 and fought Indians in west Texas. SOUTH was a Methodist minister. When he died in Bryan in July 1897, he left a widow and five children. During much of his life SOUTH kept diaries. Those diaries, plus typed copies, are on file at the Special Collections/Archives division in the Texas A&M University Library, as part of the Ruth HULL papers. SOUTH moved to Brazos Co. in 1863 and lived here almost continuously until he died. In his diaries, South noted several deaths. Sometimes he wrote that someone had died; more often, he mentioned having attended (or preached) someone's funeral (or burial) service. Researchers should note that funeral sermons may have been preached weeks or even months after the actual date of death.
